A Healthy Lunchtime Challenge 2015 was organized in the United States of America, hosted by the US First Lady Michelle Obama. The main aim of this program is to promote cooking and healthy eating among America’s young people, where the participants are kids of age group 8-12. They all have to prepare an original dish, which is healthy, Affordable and delicious, according to the website- Let’s Move.

1000 entries were submitted for the challenge and out of which, 55 dishes were chosen for the prize. And, there is a 9-year old Indian girl, who registered her name on the winning list. Shreya Patel from Illinois has won a healthy eating challenge by preparing an Indian dish “Garam Masala Quinoa Burger with Raita” that she often takes to school for a lunch.

Shreya Patel said,

“I have watched my mom and grandma make all sorts of delicious food in the kitchen with an Indian twist since I was born. I have been helping them cooking since I was three. I love to mix, measure, chop and even clean up afterwards. My grandma and I came up with this recipe together because we both love sandwiches. We make this recipe often to take school for lunch or even on picnics with friends”.

The selection of the winning dishes was based on their healthfulness, taste, originality and affordability. All the kids and parent or guardian joined the First Lady for the “State Dinner”, where the winning dishes were selected. And, from each US state, territory and the District of Columbia, there was one winner.
