Spurred by the popular public demand of the last few years, this year also car companies have buckled up their seats and are ready with a barrage of SUV offerings, spoiling the Indian car buyer for choices. With sales showing an increase each year, the demand for niching out in the fiercely competed segment is huge and not an easy one to accomplish. From old discontinued ones being relaunched to the existing ones being revamped, manufacturers are leaving no stone unturned to carve out a place for themselves in the soaring market.

Let’s take a brief look at all the new upcoming SUVs in 2018 – 2019 that would dawn the Indian roads this year.

AUDI Q3

Audi’s second-generation-Q3 is all set to come on the floor in India by next year. New Audi Q3 will contain more new features. Entry-level models get 10.25-inch instrument cluster as standard but higher variants will get Audi’s Virtual Cockpit (a 12.3-inch screen with Google maps and voice command functionality) as an extra option.

The entry-level Q3 (35TFSI) will be powered by a 150hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. There will be two state tunings in the 2.0-liter turbo-petrol – 190hp (40TFSI) and 230hp (45TFSI). The 2.0-liter diesel will also get two states of tune – 150hp in the 35TDI and 190hp in the 40TDI.

Audi Q8

Audi Q8 has not yet been signed for India but is under consideration. Features of Q8 are coupe-like roofline and frameless doors. The stylish Q8 includes bulging wheel arches inspired by the famous Quattro and the option of 22-inch wheels (the largest to be offered straight from the factory).

The Q8 is likely to be available with a choice of two 3.0-liter engines – a 340hp petrol engine in the 55 TFSI and a 286hp diesel in the 50 TDI. The petrol will feature an 8-speed gearbox, with a 7-speed S Tronic unit for the diesel.

Audi Q2

The Audi Q2 crossover SUV is all set to be launched in India this year. Once launched, this will be the most affordable Audi SUV in the country. Along with Audi’s virtual cockpit cabin, the car will have standard features including a smartphone interface, single-frame front grille, long roof spoiler, power tailgate, touchpad, 2.60 meters of wheel space and a spacious cabin along with 405 litres of storage space which can be expanded to up to 1050 litres by folding the seats.

Top safety features include Audi pre sense front with pedestrian detection, Audi Active Lane Assist, Adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic assist, etc.

BMW X2

X3 has been one of the best-selling SUVs coming out from the BMW house. The 2018 edition of this premium medium-sized SUV will be launched by mid of this year. Built on the CLAR platform, it would be 55 kg lighter and promises to offer more cabin room. The aerodynamics and fuel efficiency is further increased by a drag coefficient of 0.29. Across the globe, X3 comes with a total of six different engine which includes an M Performance variant.

The launch of M variant shrouded in mystery. However, as confirmed BMW is all set to launch the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine. The car will come with a price-tag of anywhere in the range of Rs 50 lakh to Rs 60 lakh and will boast of a 190PS of power and 400Nm of torque. X3 with great features and its snappy performance will all in all be a good value for the money.The M variant if launched will cost your pockets something around Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom).

Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai’s all-new Santa Fe is all set to be introduced in India this year. Seeing the growing demand for electric vehicles in India, the company has decided to launch the new SUV in both hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.

Hyundai SUV electric is expected to feature an aggressive price to give proper competition in the budget market.

Hyundai Tucson Facelift

Hyundai is planning to release a facelift of the Tucson SUV in 2019, the exact date is however not confirmed yet. The Tucson facelift is expected to feature a set of new specifications both outside and inside of the car.

This includes new signature cascading grille, a sleeker design, signature LED headlamps and a chiseled front bumper. The car will maintain the same profile but with a different set of alloy wheels along with a customized rear bumper.

Hyundai Carlino (QXi)

Hyundai is reportedly working on introducing a customized sub-four meter SUV specifically in India. Even though the car will also be launched in other countries worldwide, it has been made specifically for the Indian roads and requirements.

Tagged as the QXI, the all-new Hyundai SUV is expected to be launched later this year and will compete against the likes of the XUV300 in the genre. Already have been spotted many times before, the Hyundai QXI will feature the same body type as the Creta, in addition to a two-tier headlamp unit and all-around body cladding.

  • Expected Price: IRs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh (Ex-showroom)

Jeep Wrangler

Along with the internal finished and equipped with a number of new features, the new Jeep Wrangler also added some length to its wheelbase, along with longer front and rear overhangs on the four-door model; this makes it much bigger internally, with more room for the front and rear passengers.

Also in the Wrangler, there are two four-cylinder engines – a new 2.0-liter turbo-petrol and a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel, and it is possible India could get these new engines along with 8-speed automatic transmission cars. For those seeking even more power, the 3.6-liter V6 petrol and 3.0-liter diesel are also offered.

Jeep Compass Trailhawk

The most awaited Jeep Compass TrailHawk is soon going to come in India. In India, it will be the first Compass variant to offer a diesel-automatic engine-gearbox combination.

That aside, the Trailhawk will be distinguished from other Compass variants with its notably enhanced off-road ability.

Renault Arkana

Renault Arkana coupé-crossover has been showcased at 2018 Moscow International Auto Salon in Russia. One question is hitting in everyone mind whether it would be launched in India or not. Though, it is not confirmed when Arkana would be launched in India. The Renault Arkana looks gigantic in term of design that has high waistline and sliding roofline that is quite similar to luxury coupé-crossovers offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The company stated that the Arkana is based on a ‘new generation of the SUV platform’ and it is larger than the Renault Captur and Jeep Compass.

The coupé-crossover will ride on 19-inch wheels and features a fixed panoramic glass roof. The Interior features of Renault Akrana are yet to be revealed but the company says it will have up to date connectivity options’ and an ‘advanced new engine lineup’. So it is being speculated that it could come with Renault’s latest R-LINK 2 infotainment system that we have previously seen on the Renault Koleos. This system has vertically-placed touchscreen infotainment that could measure up to 8.7 inches in top-spec variants.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Test cars have been seen in India, which suggests a mid-life facelift for Pajero Sport is on the way and that might be the model that will come in India. Internally, the new Pajero Sport will get an all-leather interior, dual-zone climate control, a touchscreen infotainment system, a 360-degree camera and seven airbags, to name a few features.

It is powered with a 2.4-litre MIVEC diesel motor that makes 181hp and 430Nm of torque, coupled to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The engine might be BS-VI-compliant by the time the SUV makes it to India.

 KIA Compact SUV

Next year, Kia will bring its compact SUV to the Indian market. The sub-four-metre SUV is expected to share its basic underpinnings and engines with the Hyundai QXi.

That said, the Kia will distinguish itself with funkier styling.

2019 Ford Endeavour

The latest Ford Endeavour, which will probably be a facelift, is also expected to be introduced this year. The car was recently spotted testing in India, which revealed some of its features. In terms of design, it will have a revised three-louvre grille and front bumpers.

The SUV will be the first in line to feature the latest two-tone finished 20-inch alloy wheels. In terms of interior, it will have the same seven-seat configuration probably with softer material.

Suzuki Grand Vitara

In competition with Hyundai Creta and Nissan Kicks, Maruti is likely to come up with its all-new SUV at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo, globally. Reports say, the next-gen Grand Vitara which is the Suzuki’s product, would be experiencing a renewal of its flagship SUV in the Japanese market. The CEO, Suzuki Motor Russia, expressed his view while Speaking to the Russian publication and said that the product might be accepted in Europe but would not be welcomed in Japan and India. Looking at the high price and low sales in the Indian market, the production of the Grand Vitara has been stopped. The model is still available in the stock in some markets.

Though the Australian unit of Suzuki looks hopeful for the next-gen Grand Vitara. A micro SUV, based on S Concept is expected to be brought to the Indian market by Maruti Suzuki later this year. In addition to this, the next-gen Vitara SUV would be launched in 2020. It would be a modified version of the existing platform and would be having all the features of SUVs of same size. It is expected to be powered by a new 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine, which the company is developing.
